gal pades? 1982-83 6.2s came from the factory with standard type head bolts that were torqued in 2 steps, first to 88 ft/lbs, then to 103 ft/lbs. 1984 and later 6.2L and 6.5L diesel engines came equipped with TTY (torque-to-yield) head bolts. When servicing the 82-83 models, GM now recommends using the new TTY bolts. These bolts stretch slightly during final torquing and are designed to provide a more even and longer lasting head loading. TTY head bolts should not be re-used or re-torqued because of this stretching. The GM or Fel-Pro head gaskets are designed to not need re-torquing anyway. In a bulletin dated 1/98, both GM and the AERA have recently posted new cylinder head bolt tightening specifications for the 6.2/6.5 diesels. The new specs are: torque in sequence to 20 ft/lbs, then to 55 ft/lbs, go over all the head bolts again in sequence and re-torque to 55 ft/lbs and finally tighten each bolt an additional 90-100°. Additionally, GM specifically says not to use any sort of head gasket sealant. TTY head bolts are available from either GM or Fel-Pro for the 6.2L GM engine. All year 6.2 and 6.5 models now use the same head bolts (GM Part Number 14077193 or Fel-Pro Part Number ES-72724). Felpro head bolts are available from Northern Auto Parts (http://www.naparts.com/) and are about $18 for a set of 17 which is how many each head requires. Finally, most of the threaded head bolt holes in the engine block deck are open to the water jacket. These threaded holes must be cleaned prior to installation of the head. The best way to clean them is to run an M12-1.75 tap down into each hole, then spray the threads with an oil free solvent or carburetor cleaner. All of the new head bolts need to be cleaned and then have a thread sealer applied to both the threads and the underside of the bolt heads. This will prevent the threaded ends from leaking coolant and when applied to the underside of the bolt heads, the sealant will act as a lubricant that will help to ensure consistent torque values. This thread sealer is similar to what is used on common household plumbing pipe threads and will allow easy future bolt removal. GM, Fel-Pro and others offer good engine bolt thread sealants. NOTE: The longer water pump bolts with the 15mm bolt heads also project into the water jacket of the block. A similar treatment for these bolts will be required to prevent coolant leakage.
